at last I learn to hear
right where I’m sitting
how we grow together in the spaces
between the notes
shaping me
without asking me to pretend
something true
I’ve carried through love and loss
that is dignity

dignity

We know each other
by the dignity we let one another hold on to.

You can hear it
in how we mind folks’ space,
and how we don’t step on nobody else’s sound.

No matter the miles,
no matter the years,
dignity still hangs around.
It don’t rush off easy.

Still, I know that quiet question —
late at night,
askin’ if I did enough,
if I was enough.

When it comes time to let go,
that’s when you feel it real clear —
dignity matter more
than money,
more than clappin’ hands.

It go further
than one lifetime,
further than any record ever did.

Dignity get deeper
through what you live through,
through what you carry day by day —
‘less life break you clean in two.

Through hurt,
through gettin’ worn down,
till you damn near forget
who you used to be.

Love live everywhere.
And when love lean in close,
the hurt loosen up some.

Then dignity
find its way back,
like a blues note settlin’ just right.
