at last we learn tae stand
onywhere, even in the rain
how we grow thegither, fae the streets
fae the circle we come fae
that made us who we are
rough round the edges, still oor ain
a treasure we dinnae shout aboot
carried inside, quiet but solid
that’s dignity

mu dheireadh, ionnsaichidh sinn seasamh
ge bith càite, fiù ’s fon uisge
mar a dh’fhàsas sinn còmhla, on na sràidean
on chearcall bheag againne
a chumadh sinn thar ùine
chan eil e snasta, ach ’s ann leinn
ionmhas nach fheum fuaim
air a ghiùlan nar broinn, seasmhach
sin an urram

Dignity

We ken each other
by the dignity we show yin another.

Ye see it in how we respect folk’s lines,
and how we dinnae cross them.

Across time and miles,
dignity sticks about.
It disnae fade easy.

But aye, everybody kens that naggin thought:
am I guid enough?
am I even worth respect?

When it’s time tae part,
ye see how much dignity really counts –
mair than money,
mair than pull.

It goes further
than one life ever does.

Dignity gets deeper
through livin,
through what a person’s had tae carry –
unless they’ve been broken.

Through hurt,
through bein put doon,
till ye near forget
who ye once were.

Love’s lived everywhere.
And when love takes the lead,
hurt loses its grip.

Then dignity
shows its face again.
