At last we learn
to see, everywhere,
how community
grows out of the circle,
shapes us,
and still leaves
within each of us
a precious treasure:
dignity.

Dignity

People recognize one another
by the dignity they see in each other.

It shows itself
in honoring boundaries
and keeping them.

Across time and distance,
it endures
without fading.

And yet people know
the gnawing thought
of not being worthy enough.

When parting comes,
it becomes clear
how much dignity matters—
more than possessions,
more than influence.

It reaches further
than a single life.

Dignity deepens
through lived experience,
through what a person has carried—
unless they were broken.

Through suffering,
through humiliation,
until the memory fades
of who one once was.

Love is lived everywhere.
Only when it takes the upper hand
does suffering lose its power.

Then dignity
can become visible again.
